It was a Larry’s first degree in 1994 that set him on the path to becoming an winemaker. The degree was in Agribusiness and Horticulture. He then specialised in coupling this knowledge with Oenology through the University of Adelaide in 1996. Bolstered by this, Larry set out across Australia and Europe gaining experience as a training winemaker.
From his time at Tintara moving then onto Houghton, Larry was able to capitalise on his business skill on a winery level. By 1998 Larry was appointed Senior Winemaker where he honed his management skills working part of a large team of successful winemakers. Within six months Larry was promoted to Senior Winemaker/Regional Manager of Western Australia.
This was the keystone to understanding market success. He was responsible for all winemaking, packaging and viticultural operations in WA for not only Houghtons but all of BRL Hardys. During his time at Houghtons Larry was able to complete more vintages: Tuscany, Bordeaux, Burgundy and The Loire.
Since 2003, Larry has used his experience to run Cherubino Consulting. He has been awarded with more trophy medals than any other contemporary consulting winemaker – his attention to detail and expertise critical to this success. The accolades are testament to commitment to quality. His wines won some 80 trophies and 350 gold medals.
Today, Cherubino Consulting enjoys a varied client base from working with clients around the world including Banffi in Tuscany, Italy; Craggy Range in the Hawkes Bay, New Zealand; Staglin Family in Napa Valley, USA; Planeta in Sicily; and Capel Vale in Margaret River and Robert Oatley Wines in Mudgee, NSW.
In addition to consulting, Larry makes his own wine under three distinct labels. Adhoc, The Yard and Cherubino. All three wine labels have had resounding critical review.
Cherubino Consulting stands by the ethos of excellence in the vineyard and beyond the glass.
